3 Comfort foods to soothe our anxious minds

Apr 09,2025 | Isle Provisions

In these turbulent times, it's understandable to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of news on our phones. From the unsettling Trumpian tariffs to the upcoming SG elections and the complex challenges facing Taiwan, it's a lot to process. I've found myself glued to my screen more than usual this past week, trying to make sense of it all.

It is easy to feel harassed by all the news alerts that we receive on the phone; we may feel unsettled and the urge to do something. While we may not have the power to influence global events, we do have the control over how we care for ourselves and our emotions.

One simple way, is to nourish ourselves through the food we eat. Research shows that comfort foods can actually help calm our bodies and minds.

COMFORT FOOD# 1 - FERMENTED FOODS

A new study in EMBO Molecular Medicine offers fascinating insight into the age-old wisdom behind fermented foods. Naturally probiotic-rich delicacies—such as artisanal preserved cabbages and aged fruit vinegars—not only nourish the gut, but may also support emotional well-being.

Researchers discovered that certain beneficial probiotic strains found in these traditional foods can reduce activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for processing stress and fear. In studies, animals that consumed these probiotics displayed noticeably calmer, less anxious behaviour.

In short: foods with heritage may also be foods that make us happy.

COMFORT FOOD #2 - SOY-RICH FOODS

Soy protein has been a staple in Asian kitchens for generations, and it’s easy to see why. It’s rich in essential amino acids—great for growing kids—and offers a gentle, plant-based alternative to meat. For women, soy’s natural isoflavones can help support hormonal balance, especially after their menstrual cycle, easing restlessness and promoting better sleep. It’s a simple, nourishing choice for the whole family.

Naturally rich in flavonoids and amino acids, chrysanthemum gently soothes the nervous system, helping to ease anxiety, support better sleep, and restore emotional equilibrium. It’s known to help stabilize mood, sharpen focus, and reduce that all-too-familiar mental fatigue from long hours of screen time and decision-making.
